Quality footwear is an investment. Whether it's a pair of leather brogues, walking boots, or your favourite heels, proper care and timely repairs can extend their life by years. In this guide, I'll share what I've learned over four decades as a cobbler in Ledbury – from when to bring your shoes in, to what repairs are worth doing, and how to get the best value from your local shoe repair service.
What Do Cobblers Actually Do?
A cobbler – or shoe repairer – handles far more than just resoling. At C Westbury, we offer:
• Resoling and reheeling – Replacing worn soles and heels on all types of footwear
• Boot repairs – Zips, stitching, sole replacement, and structural fixes
• Leather restoration – Cleaning, conditioning, and colour restoration
• Stretching and fitting – Making shoes more comfortable
• Minor repairs – New laces, eyelets, buckles, and more
When Should You Get Your Shoes Repaired?
The best time to repair is before damage becomes severe. Signs to watch for:
• Worn heels – Uneven wear or exposed nail heads
• Thin or holey soles – Especially before wet weather
• Loose or broken stitching – Around the sole or upper
• Broken or stuck zips – On boots
• Cracked or dry leather – Needs conditioning before it splits
If you catch problems early, repairs are cheaper and more effective. Waiting can mean the upper is damaged beyond repair, and you'll need to replace the whole shoe.
Boot Repair: What to Expect
Boots are built to last, but they take more wear than ordinary shoes. Common boot repairs include:
• Zip replacement – A new zip can give boots many more years of use
• Sole replacement – Vibram, rubber, or leather soles depending on the boot
• Stitching repairs – Reattaching soles or fixing torn seams
• Waterproofing – Re-proofing after sole replacement
At our Ledbury workshop, we work on walking boots, work boots, riding boots, and fashion boots. If you're unsure whether a repair is viable, bring them in – we'll give you an honest assessment.
The Value of Repairing vs Replacing
A good repair often costs a fraction of a new pair of quality shoes. For well-made leather footwear, resoling two or three times over a decade is normal and economical. We also offer a postal shoe repair service – so even if you're not local to Ledbury or Hereford, you can still use our workshop. Read our postal shoe repair guide for how it works.
